Of Barack and Beyoncé: reassessments.

I was listening to the radio this morning, lying in bed and merely absorbing it all as I tend to on a Sunday morning. I heard a story about the impending inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America.

I always knew he was an intelligent man. It would be impossible to miss with such marvellous speeches and a demeanour of greatness hanging over him and his activity. I was impressed to discover that he has done a great deal of community work in inner-South Chicago. I was impressed to hear that he was a Harvard professor in Law. I was totally blown away when I heard that as a student he had once written an essay something along the lines of "The Curvature of Constitutional Law" - correlating relativistic spacetime curvature with constitutional legal concepts.

This latter connection blew me away as when I was studying at University I was precisely interested in drawing topologies and metaphors from General Relativity into sociological analysis and conceptualisations of the human world.

In other news I find that Beyoncé Knowles, an artist of whom I had always been sceptical (due to my general lack of faith in mass-produced pop culture), is performing the Etta James classic "At Last" for the Obamas. She played the role of Etta James in the film Cadillac Records. It's one of my all time favourite songs. I watched a little video of her singing as Etta on Youtube and I was impressed. Of course, I don't think anyone can compare to Etta James singing that song but it was a fine version and of course Beyoncé is a staggeringly attractive woman.

A politician of high intellectual calibre and a popular musician with grace and style, what will they think of next...
