It occurs to me that musical success in the currently internetworked world may be definable by the degree to which one is the victim of bittorrent piracy of their works. The more popular one is, the more their music is downloaded and although this may harm the bottom line of the music companies it remains that it is a definite positive signifier of popularity to be a popularly downloaded (torrented) artist. It is something of an irony that to be more popular in this way is less likely to guarantee financial success but then we all know that hungry (i.e. aspiring) musicians make better music than the spoilt and bloated old clichés of themselves they can come to embody once they become super-rich and detached from any notional reality they may have once so poignantly reflected through their art.
